Last week, I traveled with my friends to the northernmost part of Thailand, Chiang Rai, for a short trip. As one of my projects involves digital nomads, and Chiang Mai is a top choice among cities in Thailand, I thought Chiang Rai might offer some insights too. Unfortunately, Chiang Rai is much smaller, and there isn’t much to see in the city itself. During the peak travel season in northern Thailand, major attractions were bustling with tourists, but the difference in crowd size between Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai was striking.

Overall, Chiang Rai is great for a short trip (4–5 days is enough to explore the city and surrounding mountains!), and we enjoyed our time there. Then came New Year’s Eve, but after pulling an all-nighter to drive back to Chonburi (a total of 900km!), we barely had the energy to go out and celebrate.

Every year-end, companies in Thailand adjust their holiday schedules based on business needs. A funny observation I’ve made is that factories with fewer orders tend to give employees two full weeks off, from Christmas through the first week of January.
