[EP10] This week, I almost got myself buried in finance & accounting

After officially kicking off the project with my team, I feel an invisible force pulling us forward. This week, I’ve focused on company equity, shares, funding structures, profit margins, and financial projections — essentially, everything about money. Meanwhile, my two team members have been diligently working on initial research for operations, product development, and marketing.

Lessons Learned About Finance & Accounting

Although I have a background in economics, I didn’t attend business school. I remember taking accounting and statistics as required courses, but I have to admit — accounting wasn’t my favorite subject, and I forgot most of it after my freshman year.

Now, as I dig into how a business survives — what profit margins we can achieve, when we might break even, and how to negotiate with an “angel investor” — I realize that numbers are everything.

I’m grateful that this process doesn’t annoy me anymore, but learning everything from scratch on my own hasn’t been easy. I’ve been reaching out to friends working in various sectors for insights and advice. To my surprise, even friends I…
